Effective door soundproofing enhances your comfort by blocking out annoying and distracting noises from outside. Want to know how to effectively soundproof your entry and interior doors? Check out our article.
Soundproofing doors becomes a necessity when they allow too much annoying noise from outside to get through. If you value peace and quiet in your house or apartment, find out how you can soundproof your doors yourself.
Why is soundproofing exterior doors important?
Wondering why it’s worth soundproofing your front door? That’s where most of the noise that disturbs the peace of your household comes from—various sounds from the yard or stairwell. It works the other way around, too—for example, with sounds like a dog barking or loud music coming from an apartment. In both situations, this can become bothersome and uncomfortable, and as a result, cause anxiety or even sleep problems. That’s why exterior doors are soundproofed, which significantly reduces noise transmission.
What are the causes of improper soundproofing of entry doors?
The following factors are responsible for improper soundproofing of doors:
- improper installation of the door frame—a poorly installed frame can create gaps between the frame and the door panel, which negatively affects acoustics and also contributes to heat loss;
- an unstable door threshold—this component should fit snugly against the door. If it moves, crumbles, or is damaged in any way, it must be replaced;
- Worn-out door seals—if they peel away or crumble, they create gaps that let sound through. They must be replaced with new ones as soon as possible.
It’s a good idea to check the condition of these components from time to time.
Are there effective ways to soundproof a door?
Is your front door properly installed, with the threshold and seals in good condition, yet sounds from outside are still loud and bothersome? You can fix this! There are several proven methods for effectively soundproofing apartment doors. They involve applying an additional layer of insulation to the door’s surface. These solutions include:
- door upholstery;
- soundproofing mats;
- acoustic wallpaper;
- foam acoustic insulation.
Find out how they work and choose the best method for you. Also, learn what to look for when replacing door seals.
Choosing the Right Seals—What Should They Be Made Of?
Before you begin soundproofing your door, you must remember to properly seal it. This is a crucial step that affects the effectiveness of the additional soundproofing. Be sure to remove all damaged weatherstripping and install new ones. Make sure they’re made of EPDM rubber or silicone—these materials are more durable. This is very important because entry doors are usually heavy, which causes the sealing material to wear out quickly. By purchasing seals made of thicker material, you’ll avoid having to replace them frequently.
Door upholstery—the most popular method of soundproofing doors
One of the most common methods for soundproofing entry doors is using door upholstery. It’s not only effective but also aesthetically pleasing. You can buy ready-made panels at a store, but you can also order them from an upholsterer. They’re usually made of polyurethane foam and covered with faux leather or real leather. Inside, there’s sound-deadening foam.
The advantage of this solution is that it’s easy to install. What’s more, the panels are available in many color options, so you’re sure to find something that matches your interior design. Not only will you enjoy a quieter space, but you’ll also give your old door a fresh new look.
Soundproofing mat—the easiest way to soundproof a door
Using sound-dampening mats is just as effective. The mats are self-adhesive and very thin. They’re made of synthetic materials.
Before installation, you must clean the door and remove any unevenness—its surface must be free of chips or dents, as these will affect the soundproofing’s effectiveness. After applying the STP mat, smooth it out and trim off any excess with an upholstery knife. Also, take care of the door’s perimeter by covering it with additional protective materials such as vinyl strips or neoprene tape. This will increase the mat’s adhesion and enhance sound insulation.

Acoustic wallpaper – high soundproofing properties
Another effective way to soundproof exterior doors is to use acoustic wallpaper. It is made of vinyl, cork, or polyester fibers. It stands out for its high soundproofing properties. Installation is easy thanks to its self-adhesive backing. It differs from soundproofing mats in that it often features a more aesthetically pleasing, inviting, and colorful design. By choosing acoustic wallpaper, you can not only soundproof your apartment’s doors but also change their appearance—for example, by selecting one of the decorative patterns. This type of soundproofing is often found in government offices and schools.
Foam Acoustic Insulation—A Modern Approach to Sound Dampening
Foam acoustic insulation is a new method of sound dampening. It is a variation of sound-dampening mats, though significantly more effective. It is made of rubber, which gives it an unattractive appearance. For this reason, an additional finish—such as wallpaper or upholstery fabric—is usually applied over it.
Its advantages include easy installation and light weight. It is adhered across the entire surface of the door so that it fits snugly against the door frame. Of course, the door panel must first be cleaned, any unevenness removed, and holes filled with spackle. The foam can be easily cut to size, which significantly simplifies its application.
How to soundproof interior doors?
There are many ways to soundproof an entry door. However, sometimes the noise inside the house is so loud that it becomes necessary to soundproof interior doors as well. How can you help your household members and increase their comfort? What should you use to seal the doors? You can use the same solutions as for exterior doors. The easiest option seems to be acoustic wallpaper, but soundproofing mats or foam will also be helpful. Sometimes, simply replacing the thresholds, gaskets, or weatherstripping may be enough.
