Doors and Their Role in Interior Design
Many people decide to invest in new doors when undertaking a major home renovation. After all, a lot depends on their appearance, so you need to think well in advance about what material they should be made of and determine what type of door will work best in a given interior.
The Most Popular Materials
Doors can be made from various materials, though the following are currently the most popular:
- natural wood doors;
- glass doors;
- panel doors.
Types of exterior doors
The most important door in the house usually consists of a single leaf, sometimes featuring a small glass panel. These are typically wooden doors, but you can also choose other materials. Which ones? A wide selection offers you many possibilities. Steel and aluminum are becoming increasingly popular. If you value warmth and quiet, you might opt for fiberglass doors, which offer excellent insulation.

Interior Doors and Their Types
Manufacturers offer a much wider variety of options for doors installed inside the home. Here, you can choose sliding or folding doors, or you can stick with classic single-panel doors. What about materials? For interior use, MDF panels or solid wood are most commonly used, though glass is becoming an increasingly strong competitor.
When Should You Choose Custom-Made Doors?
There are many situations where it’s worth opting for custom-made doors. Does your apartment deviate from standard dimensions? Or perhaps you’re looking for the highest quality and an elegant design? For several years now, door manufacturers have been offering customers the option to order custom-made doors, allowing you to tailor this element of your interior design to your specific needs and preferences.
What should you keep in mind when buying custom-made doors?
Although there’s a wide selection of doors, you need to make sure you’re well-prepared for your purchase and take several important factors into account. How do you order custom-made doors?
Custom-made exterior doors
When it comes to exterior doors, durability and excellent insulation are key. If you’re building a house, keep in mind that—according to current regulations—the front door should be at least 90 cm wide and 200 cm high (clear opening of the door frame). This is especially important in homes with small children or people who use wheelchairs.

Also consider which way the door should open. In apartments, doors usually open inward, but in your own home, you can opt for a door that opens outward. In that case, you’ll also need to consider a landing and a canopy, which will protect you from issues such as snow accumulating at the entrance to your home.
Custom-made interior doors
Interior doors should be tailored not only to the character of each room but also to the size of the door openings. The standard width is 80 cm, though you’ll also find models that are 110 cm wide. So if you decide on custom-made doors and place a custom order, you’ll need not only to choose the door type, material, and finish, but also to take accurate measurements.

Custom-made doors—how to measure them?
The key is to measure the door opening without the door frame—more specifically, to check its height and width. Also check the width of the wall to avoid problems during installation later on. If the opening already has a door frame, measure its height and width, but do not include the trim moldings in your measurements.

Typically, the height of the opening ranges from 2060 to 2085 mm, which means you can safely opt for a standard door panel with a height of 2030 mm.
Determining the width of the door panel is more challenging. Keep in mind that it will always be slightly narrower than the opening it’s intended for, and that an adjustable door frame further reduces the opening’s width. How does this work in practice? Here’s an example. If the opening is between 90 and 92 cm wide, the door panel should be 80 cm wide. You can opt for a standard 90-cm door when the opening width is between 1000 and 1020 mm.
