Stile-and-mullion or panel? This is the fundamental question we must answer when planning to buy a door. This dilemma concerns the construction of the door leaf. In the stilted-frame variant, the door leaf consists of a frame made up of two vertical and two horizontal beams. This frame, made of wood or MDF, is filled with HDF panels, glass panels, or coffers—or a combination of these elements.
The panel construction is completely different. The frame, filled on both sides, is covered with MDF or HDF panels, which give the door a uniform appearance. The difference between the two door panel types is noticeable at first glance. We’ve covered door construction in greater detail in a separate article titled “Construction and Types of Exterior Doors: What You Need to Know.” In this article, we’d like to focus on how Barański Optimo doors are constructed.
Barański Optimo Interior Doors: Aesthetics and Durability
Barański Optimo are interior doors with a frame construction. Their door panels consist of individual elements that are veneered separately and then assembled into a single unit. The use of frame technology offers significantly greater design possibilities than panel technology. The latter essentially only allows for milling the panels covering the door leaf on both sides. In contrast, a paneled door leaf allows for a wide range of designs, which enhances the door’s visual appeal.
This stems from the very “logic” of the construction. In stilt-frame doors, such as the Barański Optimo, the outer frame serves as a sort of support structure for the entire door leaf. The infill is made of wood-based materials or glass, allowing for a variety of aesthetic effects. It is worth noting that the panels are thinner than the door frame. This creates the impression that the inner part of the door leaf is “recessed.”
The durable Optimo construction—a wooden core instead of MDF
Doors differ not only in terms of construction technology but also in the materials used. In the case of stilt-frame doors, MDF panels are the standard, and most manufacturers use them as the material for the frames. This isn’t a bad solution, but it’s hard to call it ideal. That is why, in Optimo doors, we have implemented a significantly more robust, proprietary technology: we create the frame using our own patented design with a wooden core.
In Barański Optimo doors, we’ve used a proprietary design with a wooden core
Wood is a stiffer material than wood-based panels. Using it in the door leaf’s construction reduces the risk of the door warping over the long term. Thanks to this innovative approach, we have managed to increase the bending strength of Barański Optimo door panels by over 50 percent. Additionally, the use of wood has resulted in approximately 200% greater stiffness for Optimo doors compared to traditional MDF stiles. Both results have been confirmed by laboratory testing.
Durable, thicker panels
In addition to the frame, the door leaf consists of panels. Manufacturers also have room to innovate in this area, though some companies choose to take shortcuts. We, however, do not accept compromises on quality. When designing the Barański Optimo interior doors, we decided to ensure increased strength and stability of the door leaf’s structure. That is why we used panels with increased thickness ranging from 6 mm to 22 mm. As a result, Optimo doors are not only more stable but also provide more effective sound insulation. This translates to greater comfort of use and reduces household members’ exposure to unwanted noise.
Durable veneer, waterproof adhesive, moisture-resistant door frame, and other advantages of Optimo doors
In addition to their high-quality construction, Barański Optimo doors stand out for a number of other features and solutions that enhance their durability and practicality. One of these is the thick and durable veneer. We used waterproof polyurethane adhesive to install it, which virtually eliminates the risk of the veneer peeling away from the door leaf or frame. The door frame in Barański Optimo doors is available in a moisture-resistant version, which protects the doors from exposure to water and water vapor in rooms such as bathrooms.
In the Optimo door leaves, we used reinforced panels and 6-millimeter VSG glass
We also placed great emphasis on the hardware. We selected high-quality components that stand out not only for their striking appearance but also for their durability and ease of installation and use. We’ve also paid close attention to the glass elements filling the frame. We use exceptionally thick, 6-millimeter VSG glass that’s smooth on both sides. The final result of our efforts is a product we’re proud of!
