The key to properly installing doors (both interior and exterior) is properly preparing the door opening. Without precise measurements, even choosing the right door can be quite a challenge! What kind of opening should you prepare for a 100 door?
The door dimensions provided by manufacturers in centimeters can be misleading—while they do allow you to quickly estimate the actual width of an exterior or interior door, the door openings themselves must be slightly larger. This is due to the need to install the door with a door frame—the frame itself also requires at least a few extra centimeters both vertically and horizontally. Door Opening—What Size Is Suitable for a 100-cm-Wide Door?
The actual size of the opening for the door leaf depends on which door frame you’ve chosen. Manufacturers offer solutions that vary in size—such solutions may require a wall opening that’s approximately 106 cm wide, or even 110–114 cm wide!
Don’t forget about the height of the door opening either. The type of door frame also matters here—fixed frames require a little more space than adjustable models.
How do you measure the installation opening for a 100-cm door?
When communicating with salespeople or manufacturers, above all, avoid using the term “door.” It may be misunderstood to mean the door panel itself, which could result in ordering the wrong model that won’t fit through the wall opening.
Three measurements are most important:
- height—measure from the floor to the top of the opening. Take measurements at several points and record the smallest dimension;
- width—measure this the same way as the height. Choose several spots and again record the smallest measurement;
- thickness—in this case, also account for any panels or tile on the wall. Again, select several points and record the result:
- the smallest for an adjustable door frame (this will be necessary if your walls are of non-standard thickness);
- the largest for custom-fit door frames (also called fixed frames).
The opening size depends on the type of door frame
The type of door frame you choose (fixed or adjustable) also directly affects the size of the opening you need to prepare. Fixed door frames require larger openings than adjustable ones. For fixed door frames, openings that are 11.5 cm wider are usually required, while for adjustable ones, they are about 8.5 cm wider—but this isn’t a hard and fast rule! Be sure to check the door frame you’ve chosen carefully. You’ll always find detailed information about dimensions in the manufacturer’s catalog.
Incorrect measurement of the door opening—what now?
Experience shows that it’s better to make the opening a few centimeters too large than too small. In the former case, all it takes is a little mortar and some time to quickly reduce the size to one that fits the door frame’s height and width.
The situation is worse if the door opening is too small. In this case, your options are either to widen the opening—which can be quite challenging and isn’t always possible, especially if the opening is in a load-bearing wall—or to replace the door, unless it was custom-ordered.
