Latch lock – a product worth considering
How does a latch lock work? When you close the door, the locking mechanism activates automatically. You’ll most often find this type of lock in two versions:
- mechanical—it’s opened with a key;
- combination – you enter a code into the control panel mounted next to the entrance.
Latch locks work well on apartment doors and at stairwell entrances. The idea behind using such a lock is sound and practical, as long as you always remember to take your keys with you. Once the door is locked, you cannot open it using the doorknob.
You’ll find a wide selection of latch lock models in stores. They differ in their technical specifications. For example, furniture latch locks with a replaceable cylinder, available in left- and right-handed versions, are ideal for lockers and storage compartments for personal belongings used in schools, offices, or fitness centers. The price of latch locks depends mainly on their specifications. The more technologically advanced the solution, the more you’ll pay for the product.

Types of latch locks
This type of lock can be categorized based on the type of mechanism and the installation method:
- mortise lock – installed inside the door. The bolt can be operated, for example, with a standard key. Other types of mortise locks include, among others, the latch lock, which allows the door leaf to be snapped shut and prevents it from opening;
- door panel lock (multi-point) – a single key operates three to eight bolts, depending on the type of lock. It is particularly effective for exterior and burglar-resistant doors;
- a surface-mounted lock—it is installed on the door’s surface without the need for drilling. It locks via a bolt mounted on the door frame.
- economy lock – it is locked by turning the handle. It is most commonly found in offices and hotels;
- hook lock – it is installed along with handles and latches as a lock for sliding doors.
Cylinder inserts for locks
All locks are equipped with cylinder inserts. The following types are distinguished:
- double-sided cylinder – opened from both sides with a key. Locks for exterior doors usually operate on this principle;
- knob cylinder – features a knob on one side that acts as a permanent key;
- single-sided cylinder – the lock can only be turned from one side, from the outside.

When choosing a door lock, it’s best to focus primarily on technical specifications. Prioritize your safety and that of your household by choosing a sturdy latch lock. This is not as important when selecting a lock for interior doors, where you should also consider its appearance, as it affects the room’s decor.
