The Hampton style is an interior design trend that takes its name from The Hamptons, a resort area located on the Long Island peninsula. What defines it, and why has it gained popularity in recent years? We’ve got the answers!
The Hampton style is quite distinctive—it’s closest to the classic style familiar to everyone, but this coastal aesthetic places greater emphasis on opulent accents, natural materials, and, above all, bright, vibrant colors (as opposed to classic browns). Where did the Hampton style come from?
The Hamptons are two towns located on the Long Island peninsula—Southampton and East Hampton—hence the name “Hampton” style. Even today, it remains a favorite destination for wealthy New Yorkers. Due to the towns’ location, this style has always been characterized by luxury combined with elegance, and for a long time, it was unique to this part of the U.S. East Coast. Today, it can be found virtually all over the world, and it has become particularly popular in Australia.
Hampton-style interiors and accessories gained popularity thanks to film and television. Among other factors, the TV series “Grace and Frankie”—which is set in that very region—is responsible for the success of this trend.
What characterizes the Hampton style?
It’s not hard to describe the Hampton style in a few words—it features spacious interiors with luxurious yet understated accents. The style emphasizes the atmosphere of seaside towns (from which it originates) and focuses on space and natural materials such as linen, wood, stone, or wicker.
Hampton – Colors Characteristic of This Interior Design
A Hampton-style interior has much in common with the Scandinavian style, which is much better known in Europe. There’s room here for classic white, but the seaside atmosphere is emphasized above all by the colors of the sky and sand—every shade of blue (from light to deep) and soft shades of yellow that even transition into beige or cream. A Hampton-style home will feel visually spacious and cozy.
Remember that elegant interiors in this style don’t go well with color schemes dominated by intense and saturated hues!

Hampton-Style Materials
Interiors decorated in the Hampton style should feature, above all, natural wood and other light materials. Jute, wool, linen, calico, and cotton—look for textiles and interior accents made from these materials. A Hampton-style bathroom should feature a wicker laundry basket, and you can emphasize the nautical style with natural ropes.
What furniture and accessories should you choose?
Furniture from different eras is definitely not what belongs in a Hampton-style room. Avoid modern, minimalist furniture and interior design elements. Opt for wooden furniture in light colors—it’s enough if it has a distressed look; you don’t need to look for antiques. When it comes to lounge furniture, opt for a more modern design—your comfort is what matters most. Don’t forget, however, that comfortable furniture should go hand in hand with the aesthetic characteristic of this interior design style.
Hampton-Style Rooms
A bedroom inspired by the Hamptons
A Hampton-style bedroom is a space that truly promotes relaxation. Natural fabrics are light and pleasant to the touch, and bleached wood will pair perfectly with the nautical elements you use to decorate the room.
The bed in such a space should be large, with a thick mattress. Choose wicker furnishings—clothes baskets, bedding, or even small chests of drawers made of this material will be the perfect additions for the Hampton style.
If there’s enough space in your bedroom, you can easily create a reading nook that will perfectly complement the room’s design. A light-colored armchair and a tall lamp will look truly elegant. When it comes to bedside lamps, opt for more classic ones with fabric lampshades.
Hampton-style bedroom decor is all about plants—choose ones that evoke a warm atmosphere and seaside beaches. Ficus trees or indoor palms are a good choice. Notable accents include, for example, nautical ropes hung on the walls or a warm rug made of natural materials. You could even try adding a small anchor to give the interior some character!

A Hampton-style living room? It’s not hard to create!
The Hampton style is perfect for a living room that’s meant to be a place for you to relax and unwind. The most popular choices are large, freestanding sofas or—if you have less space—corner sofas paired with armchairs. Hampton-style furniture is characterized by rounded edges and soft curves.
A Hampton-style living room should be filled with throw pillows featuring appropriate motifs—opt for light colors and nautical patterns. Accessories such as seashells or glass vessels filled with sea sand will make the room truly elegant and cozy, and the luxurious flair will be visible but not overpowering.
A Hampton-style kitchen? A spacious place to prepare meals
A kitchen designed in this style is consistent with the Hampton style found throughout the rest of the home. The most important element is the kitchen island—if you’re just building your home, include this in your plans and set aside enough space for this area. This makes it better to plan a Hampton-style home—such luxurious interiors require a lot of space. If you’re dreaming of a Hampton-style kitchen in an apartment building, it might not be the best choice if you don’t want to compromise. One solution could be to create a living room combined with a kitchen or a kitchenette.
Equally important are white or cream-colored furnishings. Cabinets should be glass-fronted (similar to those in English-style kitchens). A small but very important detail is the use of distinctive nautical-style handles or so-called “shell” handles.
New Hamptons Style vs. Classic Hamptons Style—How Do They Differ?
We’ve already mentioned that this style has become particularly popular on the other side of the world, in Australia. Interestingly, Manhattan residents are familiar with a slightly different version than the one found in the land of kangaroos. What are the differences?
In Australia, it’s referred to as the “New Hampton” style, sometimes also “Modern Hampton.” It’s a blend of elements characteristic of the New York style (accessories and furniture) with more modern elements: a wider range of permitted colors in more saturated shades (gold, light purple, or dark browns) and Art Deco furniture made from materials such as marble, glass, or even metal. New Hampton is a blend of understated classicism with a more distinctive modernity.
Stylish, luxurious, and cozy—these are the three words that best describe the Hampton style. It’s an interesting choice for spacious apartments and homes where you want a pleasant yet light and airy interior design. If the austere nature of the Scandinavian style feels too stark for you and you’d prefer a richer decor, the Hampton style is made just for you!
