A canopy over the door is often seen as an unnecessary feature that only adds to costs. However, a door canopy can serve both an aesthetic and a practical purpose. Is it worth installing one? Find out!
A door canopy is a great solution during heavy snowfall. It makes clearing snow from the entrance to your property much easier. Additionally, it protects the door from adverse weather conditions. Snow and rain significantly contribute to door damage and can impair their operation, for example, due to constant moisture. When choosing a door canopy, however, you shouldn’t base your decision solely on aesthetic considerations. The most important factors are the specifications that determine its functionality. Find out how to choose the right canopy for your door.

What kind of door canopy should you choose? Does the material matter?
A door canopy can be made of various materials. The most common are steel, polycarbonate, aluminum, and glass, with wood being less common. Each of these materials has its pros and cons:
- Steel canopies are known for their durability. They’re quite massive, so they won’t suit every type of building—they look best in modern architecture;
- Aluminum canopies are lighter and certainly more visually appealing, but they aren’t as resistant to damage as steel ones;
- glass canopies look elegant but are not very resistant to dirt. Furthermore, glass does not provide protection against UV rays. If you decide on a glass canopy, choose one made of acrylic glass—it is safer to use and does not yellow when exposed to sunlight;
- Polycarbonate canopies are very popular due to their durability, light transmission, and aesthetic appeal. Another advantage is that they come in many colors—they’re usually powder-coated.
You’ve chosen the material—now think about the shape!
It’s worth taking a moment to consider this issue. The shape of the canopy you choose should largely depend on the building’s structure. Ideally, its style should complement the shape of the roof and other architectural elements, such as the front door and windows. So what are your options? Let’s take a look!
- Flat canopies—mounted using two tension rods attached to the facade. Visually, they complement both houses with sloped roofs and more modern structures. Their simple form doesn’t clash with other elements of the house;
- Arched canopies – feature sloping sides on either side of the door. Before installation, check that the highest point of the arch aligns with the center of the front door;
- Gable canopies usually have the same pitch as the house’s roof. Their style is reminiscent of manor house architecture.
Each of these canopies features drainage gutters and wall seals, ensuring they effectively fulfill their important role of directing water away from the home’s entrance.

Entrance Door Canopies—How to Choose the Right Dimensions?
A canopy over the entrance will serve its purpose when it is large enough to protect the entrance from precipitation. For a standard door, the canopy over the entrance should be 150–200 cm wide and 75–120 cm from the wall, so that you can take shelter under it, for example, from the rain. It is not recommended to build larger structures for one simple reason—they may be less stable and sustain damage during strong winds. Furthermore, a canopy that is too large may cast too much shade over the entrance, which is particularly important for homes where the entrance faces north.
What else should you consider when choosing the right canopy?
A canopy over the home’s entrance is such an important structural element that the task of selecting the right type for your home is best entrusted to an architect. This is a one-time purchase, so it’s worth taking the time to ensure it meets your expectations in terms of both functionality and aesthetics. Above all, the canopy should be sturdy, resistant to strong gusts of wind, and durable enough not to come loose, for example, under the weight of snow. It’s also worth noting which direction your front door faces. If it faces south, a good solution is to install a canopy with a gentle slope that will shade the building’s entrance.
Canopy Installation—What Do You Definitely Need to Know?
When you purchase the canopy, you’ll also receive detailed instructions on how to install it. However, we’ll give you a general idea of what to expect during the installation process. You’ll definitely need expansion anchors. Remember that they must be suited to the thickness of the building’s thermal insulation. You’ll also need screws, a mounting anchor, and the tools necessary to drill holes in the exterior wall.

Accurate Measurements
The work process is similar for every type of canopy; differences may lie in the details. The success of the installation depends on accurate measurements. To precisely mark the canopy’s mounting points, you can use a level or a template you’ve made yourself. If you choose the second method, place the awning on a cardboard template and mark the mounting points on it. Then, hold the template against the wall and drill the holes.
Remember to choose fasteners that are suitable for the material the wall is made of:
- plastic anchors are used for brick, concrete, and stone;
- steel anchors are used for ceramic hollow blocks;
- for wooden walls, regular screws are the better option.
Balcony Canopy
If you decide to install a canopy over your balcony, you’ll need to be prepared for a few challenges. First—limited space. There’s usually less space above a balcony than above a home’s entrance. Windows that are too close together can pose a problem, so the size of the awning will be crucial. A properly selected model can significantly improve the comfort of using the balcony, for example, by providing protection from strong sunlight. It’s a good idea for the material used to make the awning to include a double-sided UV filter. However, before you begin any specific technical work, check whether you’ll need a permit to make alterations to the building.
